Gay marriage and how it affects you
Bottom line: IT DOESN'T, SO GET OVER IT. Let's get one thing out in the open here: I highly suspect the vast majority of people opposed to gay marriage are Christian, and almost assuredly conservative, traditional Christian. So, with that said, let's assume you have a nice, traditional, devout Christian family. Dad works, mom takes care of the house, little cherubs read the Scriptures before they drift off to sleep, dreaming of church on Sunday. How does it threaten you and your Christian family? If Bob and Vinnie (who live in the liberal, tree-hugger part of the city anyway) want to tie the knot, does it imperil your family? Will your strong Christian marriage crumble because a couple of dykes get hitched? Does it make you any less married? Will your kid become GAY?? I honestly don't see how any of this is possible, especially if you have a strong marriage. Especially if it's strengthened by an all-powerful deity. C'mon.I welcome anyone to justify the opposing point of view to me via the comments. The only qualification: you have to avoid using religious arguments. Nothing based on the Bible, Jesus or what your preacher told you during the sermon. Nothing about how gay marriage offends your moral sense or how it's decaying society because it's not a Bible-based wonderland. I'm talking real, practical, empirical arguments. Good propositions, valid arguments, good, preferably verifiable supporting evidence.
In the meantime, think about getting over it. Let it go. Gay marriage doesn't equal the dissolution or undermining of your marriage or family. It has no real, practical impact on you what-so-ever. It makes you uncomfortable, it offends you. Well, tough shit. The rights granted your fellow Americans (even gay ones!) aren't tailored to make you warm and fuzzy. The freedoms granted to people to do whatever they want so long as it doesn't directly harm you are what makes this arguably the greatest free nation on earth.
If America really is the land of the free, and we're going to brag about how great we are, and how we're better than everyone else, then we as a nation have to back it up. We have to protect the freedoms we boast about, even if it's not what we choose to do with our lives. Otherwise we're not really America, but just a bigoted, intolerant society which doesn't really respect the concept of freedom that we so loudly crow about.
If that's the kind of country you want to live in, then go buy some swamp-land in Africa and found your own Bible-based, fundamentalist Christian nation and leave the rest of us alone.
And that's what I have to say about that! Direct all cheers and jeers to my comments.
