I just learned today (from my philosophy professor, a percussionist) that Joe Zawinul passed away on September 11th. I had no idea until I heard it, which is a travesty. I regularly check news websites, and for this not to be mentioned with more prominence is shameful, considering his contributions to jazz and world music.I can't say much about Joe Zawinul's life and work better than the link I provided, so I'll let that do the work of reflecting on those subjects in detail. I found his music to be truly inspiring, from "Mercy, Mercy Mercy" with Cannonball right up to his contemporary work with The Zawinul Syndicate.
