The Tragedy Continues To Unfold...

Most of New Orleans' evacuation shelter points have been emptied; the Superdome and the convention center. There are people still stranded in upper floors of various neighborhoods, and some die-hard holdouts are clinging onto their homes and apartments in the French Quarter. But Michael Chertoff, the jack-ass DHS secretary, has declared that all off N.O. has to be evacuated in order to de-water the city and begin restoration.

Everyone, from Chertoff to the Louisiana governor, to NOLA's mayor are predicting a death toll into the thousands for the city. Mobile mortuary operations are set to begin soon, and a rumor I read on MSNBC that "the Defense Mortuary Service, the branch of the Pentagon that handles military deaths, has been asked to provide “thousands of body bags for the Gulf Coast.” The official spoke on condition of anonymity because the plan had not been formally announced." Pretty heavy stuff. A horribly sobering reality will set in, in the weeks to come.
